To My Boy, Hank
The world was ending when you were born.
But, my world was just beginning.
I will teach you everything I know.
I hope you will teach me so much that I don’t.
You’re life won’t be easy.
The promises and the promise is gone.
But, it will be full of wonder and confusion and trials and love.
You will have to live like a pirate or a maroon, but that is truer than the sedentary comfort we’re all so used to.
Back to the beginning for you, a nomad, homeless and homeful.
I will travel what’s left with you, old and feeble, but hopefully wise enough to help us survive.
I hate to tell you my son, but the world has ended as you were born and the new world of my dreams you must create.
I will love you forever, Hank. I don’t envy you, but I do love you.
Sincerely,
The Mad Redneck
