Alabama’s Economy in One Picture
There’s a corner in Downtown Montgomery that tells the whole story of Alabama’s economy.
From left to right:
Jimmy John’s - white/transnational capital. The restaurant is an American franchise chain owned by Roark Capital Group out of Atlanta, Georgia, which has over $37 billion in assets under management. The franchisee is likely local white capital.
The Equal Justice Initiative - Black capital under the guise of a benevolent organization. Revenue in 2022 $114 million with $401 million in assets.
The Hank Williams Museum - Redneck capital under the guise of a historical organization. Revenue in 2022 $74,500 with $57,600 in assets.
Cop to protect it all.
Not show because their institutions essentially don’t exist - Latino capital; Black and indigenous working class.
